RRB JE Recruitment 2026: 3993 Vacancies, Eligibility, Salary & Syllabus
RRB JE Recruitment 2026: 3993 Vacancies, Eligibility, Salary & Syllabus
Railway JE notification is here. And this time, the notification is not exactly a “2-page WhatsApp forward” that you can read while eating Maggi.
It is a 77-page document.
But don't panic.
You don't need to memorise all 77 pages. I have done the boring part for you.
The Railway Recruitment Boards have released CEN 04/2026 for recruitment to various Junior Engineer (JE) and Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) posts. The notification carries 3,993 vacancies across RRBs, with Level-6 pay and initial pay of ?35,400.
And yes, Civil Engineering candidates have multiple JE categories to look at.
So let's decode this notification in normal human language.

Salary: 35,400 — But Is That the Actual Salary?
The notification mentions:
Initial Pay = 35,400
and the post is under 7th CPC Level 6.
Important distinction:
?35,400 is the initial basic pay, not necessarily the amount that will land in your bank account every month.
Various allowances and deductions will determine the actual in-hand salary.
So don't look at 35,400 and immediately start planning:
"One Royal Enfield + iPhone + Goa trip + SIP."
First clear CBT-I. ?
Who Can Apply for RRB JE Civil?
This is where many candidates make a classic mistake.
They see:
"Civil Engineering"
and immediately click Apply.
No.
First check the exact post + qualification + exam group + medical standard.
For Civil & Allied Engineering, the notification maps Civil Engineering qualifications to the Civil and Allied Engineering Exam Group. It includes Civil Engineering, eligible Civil sub-stream combinations and 3-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering.
For several Civil JE posts, the post parameters specify:
- Three-year Diploma in Civil Engineering, or
- 3-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, or
- prescribed combination of Civil Engineering sub-streams,
from a recognized University/Institute.
Age Limit — 18 to 33 Years
For the general age group, the notification prescribes 18–33 years, calculated as on 01 January 2027.
The upper-age relaxation includes:
| Category | Relaxation |
| SC/ST | 5 years |
| OBC-NCL | 3 years |
| PwBD – UR/EWS | 10 years |
| PwBD – OBC-NCL | 13 years |
| PwBD – SC/ST | 15 years |
Which Civil JE Posts Are There?
The Civil-related post parameters include categories such as:
- JE (Research) / Civil
- JE / Bridge
- JE / Civil
- JE / Civil / Design Drawing & Estimation
- JE / Design / Civil
- JE / P. Way
- JE / Works
among others.
So Civil Engineering is not just:
"P-Way padho, railway track banao, ghar jao."
The syllabus is considerably broader.
Application Fee
| Candidate category | Fee | Refund after appearing in CBT-I* |
|---|---|---|
| Most candidates | 500 | 400 |
| SC/ST/ExSM/PwBD/Female/Transgender/Minority/EBC | 250 | 250 |
*Refund is subject to the notification's conditions and is available on appearing in CBT-I.
RRB JE Selection Process
This recruitment has four major stages:
The notification explicitly lists:
- 1st Stage CBT
- 2nd Stage CBT
- Document Verification
- Medical Examination.
CBT-I: The First Gatekeeper
CBT-I has:
100 Questions | 100 Marks | 90 Minutes
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 | 30 |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 25 | 25 |
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| General Science | 30 | 30 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
There is 1/3 negative marking for each wrong answer.
What does CBT-I actually test?
Think of it as the entry ticket.
It is common to all notified posts and is primarily screening in nature. Candidates are shortlisted for CBT-II based on normalized CBT-I performance.
CBT-I Strategy: Don't Try to Become Einstein in 90 Minutes
You have:
100 questions ÷ 90 minutes
That's roughly 54 seconds per question.
So if one question starts behaving like:
"Find the age of Ram if Ram's uncle's wife's brother..."
Leave it.
Come back later.
Suggested approach
| Section | Questions | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 30 | Speed + accuracy |
| Reasoning | 25 | Quick scoring |
| General Awareness | 15 | Selective preparation |
| General Science | 30 | NCERT/10th-level basics |
And remember:
Wrong answer = -1/3 mark.
So random tukka is not a strategy.
It is a donation scheme. ?
CBT-I Shortlisting: The 15× Rule
Here's an important point many candidates miss.
The notification says candidates for CBT-II are shortlisted based on normalized CBT-I marks, with the number generally being 15 times the community-wise vacancies of the concerned RRB, subject to Railway's provision to increase/decrease the limit when required.
CBT-II: Now the Real Engineering Begins
CBT-II is much more important for Civil candidates because it contains 100 Technical Ability questions.
The paper has:
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| Physics & Chemistry | 15 | 15 |
| Computer Applications | 10 | 10 |
| Environment & Pollution Control | 10 | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 | 100 |
| Total | 150 | 150 |
Time:
120 minutes
Again, 1/3 negative marking applies.
The important part:
100 out of 150 questions = Technical.
Therefore, for a Civil candidate:
Technical preparation is not a side dish. It is the main course.
How to Apply Without Creating a New Problem
The notification has one particularly important warning.
When creating your RRB account:
Mobile number + Email ID = Choose carefully.
The details entered during account creation cannot later be changed.
Also:
You can choose only ONE RRB.
Multiple applications to different RRBs or multiple applications against the same RRB can lead to rejection of all applications and possible debarment.
Can You Modify the Application?
Yes—but with conditions.
The modification window is:
16 September 2026 to 25 September 2026
and the modification fee is ?250 per occasion.
But remember:
Create Account details and Chosen RRB cannot be changed.
So don't select your RRB while your brain is still buffering.
Exam Language
CBT questions will be available in:
English + Hindi + 13 regional Indian languages
including Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Urdu and others listed in the notification. Questions will be displayed in the selected language and English
10 Mistakes RRB JE Aspirants Should Avoid
1. Applying without checking the exact post qualification
Don't assume every Civil JE post has identical conditions.
2. Ignoring medical standards
Check the medical standard attached to your preferred post.
3. Preparing only technical subjects
CBT-I comes first.
4. Ignoring CBT-I because "technical is more important"
You cannot reach CBT-II without clearing the screening stage.
5. Leaving Maths until the last month
Speed takes practice.
6. Ignoring negative marking
One-third marks can quietly destroy your score.
7. Studying 24 subjects without a plan
Break the syllabus into manageable blocks.
8. Not solving mock tests
Knowing theory and solving questions under time pressure are two different sports.
9. Applying at 11:58 PM on the last date
Website traffic has no sympathy.
The notification itself advises candidates to apply well before the closing date.
10. Applying to multiple RRBs
Don't.
The notification is very clear about this.
