Educational Qualification
Candidates must generally possess a degree in Engineering from a recognised university/institution.
The rules also recognise certain specified alternative qualifications, including prescribed examinations of professional engineering institutions and certain recognised foreign engineering qualifications. Special qualifications are prescribed for particular Electronics-related services.
Candidates who have appeared in or are appearing in a qualifying examination may also apply provisionally, subject to producing proof of the required qualification within the prescribed time if called for the Personality Test/Interview.
UPSC ESE 2027 Selection Process
The UPSC ESE selection process consists of three stages:

The marks obtained at all three stages are used for determining the final ranking, subject to the prescribed qualifying requirements.

Paper-II is based on the candidate's selected engineering discipline—Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Electronics & Telecommunication.
There is negative marking for wrong answers. One-third of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for an incorrect answer in the objective papers.
Stage-II: Main Examination
The Main Examination consists of two conventional engineering papers.

The papers are discipline-specific.
Stage-III: Personality Test
The Personality Test/Interview carries 200 marks. Candidates who meet the Commission's qualifying criteria in the written stages are called for this stage.
Finally recommended candidates are also required to undergo the prescribed medical examination and physical standards assessment.
